I just saw the trailer of Dil Dosti Etc and from the 3 min 20 sec trailer, it seems like its going to be a hatke type of film. I saw Prakash Jha's name associated with this film. The last Prakash Jha film I saw was Gangaajal and I liked the movie because the story was similar to what happens in reality. I hope Mr. Jha has done all his research to make such a film like this with a youth target does all the justice to us, the young generation of the developing India

To be honest, it reminds me of Rang De Basanti, story of some youngsters trying to figure out what to do in life, a revolutionary type of film and lets wait and watch weather it is that good of a film

From whatever I've seen (the site and the trailer), it does not look like a wannabe Rang De Basanti. There is no mention of them becoming a revolutionary, though it does look like a coming of age films.
But looking at the similarities viz both the film being set in Delhi and being about youngsters trying to figure out laugh, was Rang De Basanti an inspiration or a reference point when you started making the film?

Sorry, I meant figuring out life and not laugh:)

Hello Darshan/ Nipun,
As you might have seen on the homepage, the germ of the idea of making Dil Dosti Etc came way back in 1997 in Cambridge, England. I wanted to visit India and see how we stand today since Independence. I thought of visiting the cinema character of Apurv (from Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy) and see what today's Apurv is upto - with all the wealth and time, and one who can indulge in figuring out what to do with them. In contrast to this new yuppy-India character, we invented Sanjay Mishra who is still steeped in lack of opportunities and rooted in conservative values. That's how the film began. It is only appropriate that I get recall to this ten years later today on 15th August, 2007, on the 60th anniversary of India's Independence.

All I have to say is........i'm eagerly waiting for the film to be release..........BEST OF LUCK PAWAN

Well I have worked briefly with Manish (Director and Writer) and Pawan (Co-writer), so have got chance to read the script. Please do not compare movie with RDB, there is absolutely nothing common except Delhi campus. The movie was shot before RDB was released.

As highlighted by their Team the movie is in mold with cinema created by Satyajit Ray, Shayam Benegal and Sudhir Mishra. The apparent difference is the whole setting and the new generation perspective added by Manish. So it is realistic film but not based in older times which we are so used to seeing. It is youth film; it has all the typical elements which young people talk about, love, sex, abuse, violence, friendship and loyalty. Yet all these elements are not forced but part of screenplay which is fast, characters are closer to life with lots of shades, so it should not be tedious viewing.

I guess it wouldn’t be great block buster but would do well to emulate movie like hazaaron khwaishey aise. What I am looking forward to is will this movie give foothold to director so that he can have a career like Shyam Benegal or Sudhir Mishra, well we will see that, but I fancy him to give run for money to more contemporary ones including Madhur Bhandarkar and Ritupurno ghosh. Lastly some words for actors, I happen to see few scenes which were shot. Naseeruddin Shah’s ( my all time fav actor ) son Imaad looks to be very easy as an actor, we all know about Shreyad Talpade ( Iqbal and Apna Sapna Money Money ), there are few others who could get good break from this movie.

Happy viewing.

Thank you everyone for postings. Sundeep, great that you liked the site and the title of our film. We chose DDE after a lot of deliberation. So its good to see it catching up. Your ideas on the merchandise sound very good. We will consider them.

As Hamed says, the movie was well into pre-production (though not yet shot) before Rang De Basanti was released. Though we loved the film, it did not influence either our story or its treatment. Indeed, getting the right cast has been key to this process. Not only the chief protagonists played by Imaad and Shreyas have done a great job, but a huge ensemble of supporting actors who are part of the college campus and other delhi elements add value to the script and its execution.

Thank you Hamed for your good wishes. Looking forward to more contributions from all of you.

- Manish

Ashutosh Sapru

hi, I saw the homepage. Not bad at all. Reminds me of the movie
Hip Hip Hurray, of course that was a different kind of movie compared to what this one looks like.

Judging by the background posted about the producer actors & director on the website and whatever I could gather from director's film making abilities, the film seems to be in good hands...

To be honest, am tired of the 'multiplex films'. They serve crap in the guise of intelligent cinema, barring an occasional 'ek chalis ki last local' or 'honeymoon travels'.
Even the hit Bheja Fry fried my bheja.
Dil Dosti Etc looks fresh. Please, please, please, guys, deliver. We deserve to see some good cinema.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Harinder about multiplex cinema. The crossover films are mostly crossed over from foriegn sources. They think that the audience come to theater for popcorn and cola.
U'r film does look set to deliver something new. At least something intelligent is happening on the trailer.

Hi Dil Dosti etc... All I wanted to say was that this movie reminded me of RDB, which was a great movie. I did not mean to say that its inspired from RDB. I really like this "experimental" phase of Bollywood where we have got rid of the age old love story formula and trying out new stuff that actually matters or relates to the average cinegoer. Best.

Hi guys
I can not seem to open your promo on homepage! Also not go beyond the first page where you have five speaking to you..!

Dil Dosti Etc Webmaster said...

Thank you folks for some serious complements. We are sure just like the trailer and the homepage the film would live to your expectations....

arshan - No need to apologize whatsover; you started it all! We have enjoyed the debate on how this film will be different from RDB.

Keep walking!

meant Darshan ofc.

Agreed.

One is reminded of Rang De Basanti on seeing your subject and promo (working!, but SLOW) is not because it is similar or taken from thAt film, but there are so few films that lay claim to originality and energy. So people's comments on similarity should be seen in a positive lite.

and Hellow! who liked 'ek chalis ki last...'!!! Puhlezzz... the point is one goes that way back in time to think of Rang de B. and say hey that was a good film, and ur subject reminds us of that film. [aren't i glad we don't go back to mother india? no wait i should name a film which is indusputibibly good film for all? Sholay, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai... I dunno guys... Mince

congratulations 'm'! THANKS for inviting... is looking good!

I would greatly appreciate it if on one of your famous interviews at Cannes if you could just lie and aknowledge me as having a great impact on your life : -)
It amazing how years have gone by,i am now serving at the Kenya High Commission in Lusaka, Zambia…

Well Raja of Benaris take care and keep in touch i feel truly proud of you!

hi folks,

after rgv ki aag u will manage to go scott free with this dud.
just make sure that its not presented in a sleazy way otherwise nobody in movies pardons a sleazy failure...u know all that ostracism from A- banners..ki chi chi...ye director to bahoot sleaze karta hai aur iski last film bhi pit gaiyi thi...kaun sa star iske saath kaam karega...

anyway, thats a worldly wise advice once u come to terms with the fact that this film with such respected names as prakash jha, shreyas, smriti and to a certain extent nikita and imaad and ishitta(post her signing spree) will still go down the drain.

Hey “tarun-thedeletedone” or should one say “tarun-the-vicious-one”
… your posting is plain nasty… but we will keep it; for cinema is egalitarian and so should be the representations. All we’ll point out is this – it’s highly unfair to speculate on the sleaze the film may have or a dud it may be… WAIT till the film is out. We promise you – you’ll be eating your words (i.e. if there is some honesty).

And hey, “kinda' well-wisher”
Re: your posting on Smriti Mishra’s diary - we are putting the response for you here as there is strange concurrence between ‘tarun-the-*-er’ and you; for your two posts are just 10 minutes apart and has a similar malice; an unlikely coincidence if one considers the number of postings we’ve got and days this blog has been up… anyway, it is a colossal misreading into Smriti’s words to suggest that she was uncomfortable or had fights over script and shooting (some other suggestion are too gross and in bad taste for a reaction). In Dil Dosti Etc, Vaishali’s character is author-backed, and Smriti has done a great job… you too would be eating your words, just wonder if the words will be going into two mouths or will that be one!

Keep walking guys!

oh, dont take whatever i say as a criticism. i know that ur blog is being visited by so few people so i grabbed my share of fun. It is difficult to make a film but it is easy to predict well in advance - a hit, a flop, sinking without a trace, sleazy film by a newcomer... fellows knew RDB is a hit when they read the script and aamir gladly worked with an ex-failure.
read about this smriti thing: hey, why dont u make a sob press story "that smriti mishra is talented is known but only gets small parts. this time when the director suggested cutting a scene, she put her foot down..." arrey, press will love this type of sob story.
smriti didnt visit a prostitute-she shud have, they are so kind and gentle and friendly with filmy people coming for research. u wont detect an ulterior motive in them unlike when u r dealing with foney filmy folks.
anyway, i will watch ur film if it survives 4 days at the nearby multiplex.
its the oldest trick in the cinema trade to make a sleaze film to get a break. nothing wrong with that.

Finally a movie that id happily watch for the second and third time!!!
Dil Dosti Etc portrays 2 chracters that represent opposite ends of the spectrum with unbelievable realism. Through these chracters that sit on opposite sides of the devide the movie also potrays many other realities of college/hostel life.

Often i find that scripts with much promise end up being poorly improvised with dismal final results. Well, DDE is a plesant exception to this disappointing trend of unrealised potential.
The film that has left me reminiscing of my college days full of exploration. DDE had it all, from disheveled college rooms, worn out hostels, grafitti laden walls, violence, student politics, sex, ragging, rebellion and smoking bidis, different values often colliding and then coming together in kaleidoscopic harmony, not to forget girls/guys from the other side of town and the eternal struggle between parents and the coming of age adolescent.
The only thing that might have been pushed too far on the agenda was the sexual exploration. Yes with the new found freedom the young guns are eagerly seeking a first bite into the forbidden fruit but there is more that defines these early years of maturity.Though with an already risky subject i guess the flim makers choose to play safe and lace the script with the sexual theme; After all what good is the movie if it dosent draw crowds!
All in all, a beautifully crafted movie!!!
